Swimming Victoria is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Geoff Smalley after a battle with MND. SV and the wider swimming community extends its sincere condolences to Geoff’s family.

Geoff was the long time coach of South Gisborne Sharks Swimming Club and although he retired from coaching a number of years ago, his influence on Central District Swimming and beyond is still being seen today.

He developed the talents of many young swimmers who later went on to bigger and better things. A massive supporter of competitive swimming in Central Victoria, Geoff could always be relied upon to provide a large team of enthusiastic swimmers at all local meets.

Geoff ran his Gisborne South Swim School business for many years, where he actively encouraged his swim school clients to take the next step into competitive swimming. There was always a steady stream of new, young swimmers appearing at Central District meets in the South Gisborne Sharks colours.

Geoff was loved by everyone at his club - swimmers and parents alike. Over the years a number of Geoff's squad moved to other clubs to further their swimming careers. Geoff was always supportive of their move. He had provided the foundation for their love of swimming and wanted nothing more than to see them continue swimming to adulthood. Geoff just turned up with a new batch of young swimmers at the start of the next season!

Geoff's gentle and "grandfatherly" demeanor was a perfect match for the young swimmers he nurtured. His cheerful face around pool deck will be fondly missed by many. We thank Geoff for his many years of contribution to swimming in Victoria.

Vale Geoff Smalley. May he rest in peace.
