For the first time ever, we headed to Wangaratta for the 2023 Victorian Country LC Championships from 21-23 January.
The Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre proved to be the ideal location for the Championships, with it’s recent major upgrade including a new 50m outdoor pool, additional changeroom facilities and improved lighting.
The new pool produced some fast swimming with 14 Victorian Country Records broken across the 3 days of competition.
In the Mens Breaststroke events Cameron Jordan from Bendigo East was a force to be reckoned with. He broke the Victorian Country Record with his victory in the Men’s 50m Breaststroke, blitzing the competition with his time of 24.48. He bagged another 2 Gold medals in the Men’s 100m and 200m Breaststroke events as well as a Silver in the Men’s 400m IM.
It was a similar story for Kangaroo Flat’s Emily Kearns, who was impressive in the Women’s Backstroke events. She started strong in the Girls 16-17 Years 100m Backstroke, hitting the wall in a new Victorian Country Record time of 1:05.40. She went on to add another 2 Gold medals to her name in the Women’s 100m and 200m Backstroke events.
On Sunday night the weather took a turn, and lightning forced the session to be called off. Thanks to the swift action and communication of the organising committee, the day 3 program was adjusted to a timed finals format to accommodate all events. A fantastic effort from everyone involved!
