926 athletes took to the pool at MSAC for two days of fast paced competition at the Victorian Open Short Course Championships over the weekend. There was a great atmosphere both in and out of the pool, which made for a fitting way to cap off what has been an exciting short course championship season.

Due to the lack of short course competition in recent years, this year’s Championships also saw the inclusion of 11 years and under events with swimmers competing as part of a state challenge with top ten finalist ribbons up for grabs.

Dylan Logan (Geelong Swimming Club) was a dominant force in the men’s multi class events. The 19 year old, coached by Sadat Hussain took home an incredible 9 Gold medals.

In the female multi class events Jaime-Lee Getson from Western Melbourne Propulsion (coached by Seb Bettiol) was a standout performer adding 4 state titles to her name. She had tough competition from Ballarat Gold’s Anna Leighton (coached by Mark Stahl) who also claimed 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze medal.

Fresh from competing at the US Nationals as part of the Australia A Team, David Schlicht (MLC Aquatic, coached by Jayden Brian) bagged 3 Gold medals in the Men’s 100m Backstroke, 100m and 200m IM events.

Nunawading’s Abbey Kearney (coached by Jol Finck) was another standout performer. The 19 year old took out the Women’s 200m and 400m Freestyle events, along with 3 Silver medals.

12 year old Mia Mifsud was in fine form. The Essendon District Aquatic swimmer, coached by Chris Stathis, claimed an impressive 4 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze medals.

Kody Said proved himself as a promising distance swimmer with victories in the Boys 12 Year Old 400m, 800m and 1500m Freestyle events. The Traralgon swimmer, coached by Dean Gooch also took time out of his packed schedule to accept the Male 12 Year Age Group Champion Award at the Swimming Victoria Awards on Saturday.

Nunawading once again took out the Winter Short Course Trophy for the highest aggregate points across both Victorian Short Course Championships.
