Super Saturday at the Victorian Relay Competition

13 February 2018
Vic Relay Comp - Queens Baton Relay
Written by: Swimming Victoria

We had a blast at our inaugural Victorian Relay Competition on Saturday! 251 teams lit up the pool at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) from Optus Junior Dolphins to ex-Olympians and a great time was had by all!

It was a very special start to the day with the Queens Baton Relay passing through MSAC on it’s way to the Gold Coast for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Former Australian pole-vaulter and Olympic Gold medallist, Steve Hooker, carried the baton from Lakeside Stadium. MSAC erupted as Steve passed the baton to 4-time Olympic diver Loudy Wiggins (formerly Tourky).

The buzz continued as the swimmers took to the pool for the first events. The teams were made up of swimmers of all ages and standards, adding to the fun of the competition. Throughout the day we saw some great swimming, teamwork and a lot of laughs!

A wonderful display of sportsmanship took place in Event 12, the 16 & Under Male 4x50m Freestyle Relay, as swimmers from the first placed Melbourne Vicentre team gave their ribbons to the young Gisborne Thunder team after they touched the wall last in a gutsy effort.

Well done to Doncaster Templestowe, who were awarded Champion Club (calculated as a percentage of their points from Meet Manager, divided by the number of teams entered).
