The swimming competition in the pool has come to an end in Tokyo and our Victorian athletes have added 4 Bronze medals to the tally in what has been described as our most successful Australian Olympic swim team.

The Australian Dolphins finished second on the medal tally behind the USA with 20 medals, including 9 Gold, 3 Silver and 8 Bronze.

Brendon Smith kicked things off for us in the first event on the meet, the Men’s 400m IM. He had an amazing swim in the heats, with his time 4:09.27 not only securing his place in the final, but also a PB and a new Commonwealth Record. He went on to win Australia’s first medal, touching the wall at 4:10.38 to claim Bronze. Brendon also swam a PB in the heats of the Men’s 200m IM, finishing in 22nd place.

It was quite an Olympic debut for Matthew Temple, with his first swim resulting in a Bronze medal, swimming in the final of the Men’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay. He added another Bronze medal to the tally in the Mixed 4 x 100m Medley Relay, swimming the butterfly leg. He was impressive in his individual events, finishing 5th in the final of the Men’s 100m Butterfly (50.92) and 18th in the heats of the Men’s 200m Butterfly (1:56.25).

Mack Horton was an influential member of the Men’s 4 x 200m Freestyle team. The dual Olympian had a strong swim in the heats posting a time of 1:47.51, with the team going on to win Bronze in the final.

Swimming Victoria congratulates Brendon, Matthew, Mack and coach, Wayne Lawes on their success in Tokyo. With such a difficult year for Victoria in 2020 and with so much time out of the water we couldn’t be prouder of what you have achieved!
