The City of Wangaratta was buzzing over the weekend as 490 swimmers and their families converged on the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre for the 2018 Victorian Country Short Course Championships. The atmosphere was electric, and the swimmers didn’t disappoint with some spectacular performances and a number of records and PBs achieved.

Over the 2-day event, 3 Country Records were broken, 16 Country Records were set in new events and with the introduction of Multi Class Records, we saw our first 10 Victorian Multi Class Records created.

Wodonga Amateur’s Zoe Deacon was a top performer, breaking 2 Country Records in the Girl’s 18 & over 50m Breaststroke and 100m IM events and creating 3 new Country Records. It was a jam-packed schedule for the 18-year-old, who competed in 12 events, taking home 5 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.

In the Multi Class events it was Traralgon’s Ruby Storm who was turning heads, winning Gold medals in the 50m Breaststroke, 50m and 100m Freestyle and Silver in the 50m Butterfly and 50m Backstroke. She also set 3 Victorian Multi Class Records.

Traralgon once again proved too strong for the local teams taking home the Robert ‘Bob’ Carmichael Trophy for the 10th year in a row, finishing with a combined aggregate points score of 1968, ahead of Geelong (747), Warrnambool (661), Bendigo East (612) and South Gippsland Bass (608), who rounded out the top 5.

Swimming Victoria extends a huge thank you to the Ovens & Murray District Swimming Association and all their volunteers for hosting this wonderful event for the second year in a row.

We now look ahead to 2019 and are excited to announce that the 2019 Victorian Country SC Championships will be held in Ballarat at the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre from 17-18 August 2019.
