65 Club Captains, Vice Captains and emerging leaders from 38 clubs around Victoria came together on Sunday for Swimming Victoria’s annual Developing Young Leaders Program. Now in it’s fourth year, the program provides both personal and professional development for young leaders in the swimming community.

Swimming Australia CEO, Leigh Russell kick started the day with her presentation, ‘Be Your Best Self’, which focused on taking a whole person approach to what is important. Swimmers were urged to consider the critical factors, how they really make decisions and how they can use ‘hygiene’ factors such as sleep, stress and diet to drive their leadership.

Because values and goal setting are integral to any good leader, Joanne Love, helped the swimmers understand how to establish their personal values and the power of goal setting. Not only is Joanne a swimming coach, she is also a leadership coach and performance psychologist, with many years of experience in helping others to achieve success.

In the last session, Jerry Grayson captivated the swimmers as he shared stories of his experiences as a former Royal Navy search and rescue pilot, inspiring the young leaders to be the best at what they do.

We’ve had some great feedback from participants. One of the swimmers said “I enjoyed the program immensely and have seen great key messages that I believe I can improve upon within my squad environment. I have already begun to communicate with my coach and bring into action some of the things I have learnt.”

Thank you to all the swimmers for their participation and the clubs for their fantastic support of this program. We look forward to seeing the swimmers put these skills to use as they lead the way both in and out of the pool.
